The various types of energy are the basic materials that power is derived from. They are then converted into secondary forms such as electricity and fuels and transmitted through different channels to provide power for our homes, industries, vehicles and lives. Energy sources are classified as renewable and non-renewable.

Renewable (or clean energy) is energy that is generated from sources of natural resources that are constantly replenished. Examples include solar, wind, water and geothermal. Fossil Fuels (coal oil and natural gas) are not renewable due to the fact that they form more slowly than we do.

Solar energy can either be used in large solar power plants or a single roof. It can also be transformed into photovoltaic solar power, which produces electricity directly. Water can be harnessed in order to generate hydropower, or be utilized to create the energy of waves and tides. Geothermal power is generated by underground reservoirs that contain hot water. Bioenergy comes from diverse organic sources, including woody crops or dung from livestock, as well as human wastes.

Renewable energy is not only green but also more affordable than fossil fuels. However, the challenge is that renewable energy requires massive infrastructure to harvest and transport the energy, which could result in difficult trade-offs due to economic, social and environmental reasons. However, the advancement of these technologies is growing and they are making strides against more traditional fossil fuels. In the future renewable energy may be more affordable than coal and oil.
